A lightweight file manager can be quite useful in many situations. If you need something simple, but effective, then you should try Doszip Commander. It looks and feels like Norton Commander, but it comes with a few other features, like native support for ZIP archives. Its small size can be an advantage in many situations, like integration on DOS bootdisks.

Doszip Commander is distributed under the GNU General Public License, which means that it is absolutely free. The application is less than one MB and it doesn't need to be installed. All you have to do is extract an executable from an archive, in which you can also find a text file with useful instructions.

The application provides a text user interface, with twin panels, on which you can browse through your files and folders. Also, the dual-panel design makes it quite easy to copy or move files from one place to another. Doszip Commander is similar to Norton Commander in almost any way. Although its controls can be used with a mouse, they can be more comfortable with a keyboard, which may intimidate inexperienced users, because there are various functions which can't be found at a first glance.

On the surface, it may seem that Doszip Commander lacks many features, but it actually comes with everything you would expect from a file manager, including a search function, the ability to view file and disk properties, selection inversion and more. A key feature is the possibility of creating and extracting ZIP archives. Like most functions, it can be used via hotkeys, but you can also use the mouse to look for the appropriate options in a series of top menus.

Pros

The application is less than one MB large. You can have it up and running in no time. It can be controlled through the keyboard and it provides support for mouse controls as well. Also, the application comes with native formats for ZIP archives.

Cons

You can't resize the interface to the dimensions of your choice. With Doszip Commander, you can mange your files in an efficient manner, while sacrificing almost no memory and processing power.
